Join Alex Corbitt, NCTE Middle Level Section chair, and Tiana Silvas, NCTE Executive Committee Middle Level representative-at-large, for an engaging discussion about member experiences in NCTE and ideas for the future as we continue to grow and support our learning community. All members are welcome!

- Share their experiences and ways that NCTE or its programs have been particularly supportive of their teaching careers,
- Ask questions and give feedback related to NCTE’s support of Middle Level members, and
- Learn about NCTE resources and upcoming events for Middle Level members.

Alex Corbitt is an assistant professor of literacy at Syracuse University. Prior to working in higher education, he was a seventh-grade language arts teacher in the Bronx, New York. His teaching and research explore how young people represent their identities, communities, and civic lives through processes of play and coauthorship. Oriented by participatory methods, Alex engages in long-term partnerships with schools and organizations to understand their instructional practices and co-design justice-oriented programming. The impact of Alex’s work has been recognized by a variety of organizations, including: NCTE, ILA, AERA, NYSRA, Boston College, and the Sociological Initiatives Foundation.
Tiana Silvas (she/her) is a mother of two and has been teaching in New York City for more than twenty years. Currently, Tiana is teaching sixth-grade ELA. Throughout her time as a public school educator, Silvas has taught upper elementary, was a literacy coach, and served on several equity-centered think tanks. Additionally, Silvas was the recipient of the 2019 NCTE Donald H. Graves Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Writing and is the NYC 2025–2026 Big Apple District Champion. Silvas takes a learning stance and embraces ongoing reflection as she works collectively for educational equity with students, staff, and families.
