NCTE Report a Censorship Incident Form

The primary purpose of this report is to inform NCTE of censorship in schools and classrooms so we can remain up to date on what issues are happening throughout the country. We welcome reports from anyone who is aware of current censorship incidents in schools and school libraries. Current NCTE members can also receive additional advice, document or policy review, and other support when faced with challenges to texts (e.g. literary works, films and videos, drama productions), to student writing, or to teaching methods used in their classrooms and schools. Please use this form to report an incident. Please email intellectualfreedom@ncte.org with any questions.

  • Please provide a PERSONAL email address to protect the confidentiality of our communications. We encourage you to review your state's FOIA or Open Records laws concerning your personal email account.
  • Let us know what is happening in your school, classroom, school library, school district, or state. Please include how you are involved (as a teacher, parent, student, administrator, community member, etc.
  • Include titles and authors, films, songs, articles, etc. You can also list local or state educational policies related to books, instructional materials, schools, and teaching that are being proposed or used to censor educational materials. Feel free to provide links to relevant information.

  • School administration can include a department head, principal, superintendent, etc. Support can include keeping teachers well-informed of circumstances related to the incident, following current approved policies, support of the teacher as a professional, or any other type of support.
