In May, 2016, TheDREAM.US announced that it would partner with two universities, Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) and Delaware State University (DSU), to provide scholarships to students “who are ‘locked out’ of access to a college education in their home states[1].” TheDREAM.US is an organization that provides scholarships to immigrant students who have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals[2] (DACA) status or Temporary Protected Status (TPS). While there are a number of states that offer access for DACA and TPS students, there are sixteen states that prevent those students from enrolling in college or charge them out-of-state tuition, even though they reside in the state[3]. It is these students who are eligible to apply for scholarships to attend either ECSU or DSU. In fall 2016, 49 students will be attending Eastern Connecticut State University, and the “[s]cholarship [will] cover a significant portion of the costs of tuition, fees, and on-campus housing and meals up to a maximum of $20,000 per academic year ($80,000 maximum) for a bachelor’s degree[4].”
