The California Community College Chancellor’s office has released a report on distance education in California community colleges which can be found on the Chancellor’s Office website at:

The report is especially relevant for preparatory composition courses since it speaks in a positive way about the use of online learning, and especially MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), as a tool for teaching “basic skills” in writing (see p. 37 of the report). Worth noting is the participation of Coursera, a MOOC company that is currently looking to monetize MOOC education and offer MOOCs for credit at public institutions. Also worth noting is the equation of writing with “basic skills.”
