Governor Phil Bryant has recently come out publicly against the CCSS. Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves soon followed suit. These gentlemen, who may be up for re-election in a year or so, want higher standards developed by teachers, businessmen, and university representatives within the state, with the aim of “even higher standards.” Teachers (NCTE/NWP affiliated for the most part) are using social media to support the Common Core as appropriate standards developed by teachers at the direction of the states and vetted during the process. Some invite the public to read the ELA standards themselves to understand what students should know and be able to do for college and career. Some point out that methodology is not part of the CCSS. A few of the ELA teachers are careful to speak only of the ELA standards and to admit that they know little about the math standards. State Board of Education President, John Kelly and appointed State Superintendent of Education Carey Wright remain in support of the CCSS for Mississippi students, “The state Board of Education and Department of Education are only interested in making sure our children reach their highest academic potential.”
