Budget meetings are on the minds of politicians in Iowa, and budget cuts are worrying those involved in higher education. Iowa could be facing up to $2.5 million in budget cuts this fiscal year. In 2017, Iowa incurred a $350 million budget shortage, which was the impetus for budget cuts. This budget shortage is followed by a projected $34.7 million shortfall in the current budget year (see Globe Gazette). 31% of institutions such as Iowa State University’s budget is dependent upon the state. This funding has been reduced, including research centers at Iowa State that saw a reduction by $1.8 million dollars. See Iowa State Daily for full details. The future does not look brighter for higher education funding in Iowa as proposals for 2019 call for a $5.1 million reduction (see Daily Iowan).
