Save Our Schools Arizona is a grassroots organization committed to stopping (on the November 2018 ballot) expansion of Arizona’s current school voucher program (SB1431 was narrowly pushed through the legislature by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey; state senator Debbie Lesko of Peoria, AZ, is its sponsor). A recent AZCentral article states, “SB 1431 made all 1.1 million Arizona students eligible to apply for the voucher program, which grants tax dollars to parents for private-school tuition or other education expenses. While broadening eligibility, the bill capped the number of recipients of the Empowerment Scholarship Account program at 30,000 by 2022.”
On August 8, 2017, Save Our Schools Arizona delivered over 100,000 ballot signatures to election officials. The state elections director confirmed that Arizona’s largest county certified its signatures and the referendum, which will be known as Proposition 305, is sure to make the ballot. A pro-voucher group has filed a lawsuit with Maricopa County Superior Court challenging ballot language and signature-gathering methods.
