On January 7th Governor Brown released his proposed 2016-17 state budget, which includes increased funding for the UC, the CSU, and California Community Colleges. The proposal includes an additional $125 million in General Funds for the UC, and additional $148 million in General Funds for the CSU, and a 4.4% increase in funding for the CCCs. The budget proposal highlights a number of areas that are of special interest to composition instructors in higher education: serving underprepared students, timely completion of degree, and the use of technology to address student needs. The proposed budget highlights fully-online courses and AP credits as two avenues for decreasing time to completion of degree, and both of these areas may directly affect the teaching of composition.
