Under House Bill 3399, Oklahoma must have new standards prepared by 2016. The final draft of theNew Standardsshowed up on the OK State Dept. website on January 21. These standards were written by a team of 16 professors, teachers (elementary, middle, and high school), literary consultants/coordinators/directors, and a director of educational assessment. The standards have 8 vertically-aligned categories with leveling based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Each category has a reading and a writing component: Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing Process, Critical Reading and Writing, Vocab., Language, Research, Multimodal Literacies, and Independent Reading and Writing. The State Dept. is currently collecting letters of support for the revised standards. If the standards are passed, they will be implemented beginning in the 2016-17 school year.
