The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce has published the report “The Just-In-Time Professor” on the working conditions of contingent faculty in higher education. The report is relevant to college writing teachers since so many writing teachers in higher education are contingent faculty.
While praising adjunct faculty for being highly skilled and dedicated to students, the report critiques the working conditions of many contingent faculty: low wages, long hours and commutes, job and course load instability, and lack of opportunities for professional support and advancement.
The issues discussed in the report are addressed in the
NCTE Position Statement on the Status and Working Conditions of Contingent
Faculty, which can be found athttps://www2.ncte.org/statement/contingent_faculty
