Texas is beginning once again a revision to its state standards for English Language Arts and Reading (Kindergarten through English IV). The goal is that this revised set of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) will be implemented in the 2018-2019 school year. The State Board of Education (SBOE) charges the Texas Education Agency (TEA) with supervising this process which has begun with SBOE members nominating writing team members (some chosen from a pool of applicants to the TEA) as well as nominating expert reviewers. These nominations are due by May 15, 2015. Once the expert review panel has been named, they will first review the current TEKS for ELAR. The expectation is that the writing teams will be named during the summer with their meetings to begin the review and revision process in late July or early August 2015. Once the writing teams (15 members each for a K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and English I-IV) have completed their work, their revision suggestions will be presented to the expert review panel for further recommendations. After that, the SBOE will have the opportunity to accept, revise, or reject these revisions.
