On 1/16/2017, Gov. Gina Raimondo proposed an expansion of the RI Promise program that would guarantee 2 years of free college education for RI students who attend any of the state colleges and universities.
According to FreeCollegeRI.com, this initiative will provide students with the needed incentive to complete their degrees on time. The website references degree completion rates for URI, RIC, and CCRI. It further suggests that this service will cost “less than one half of one percent of the state budget.” The Governor suggests that the state’s economic growth will allow the monies for this program to be raised.
The Governor’s long term goal is for 70% of RI adults to have either a postsecondary degree or a certification by 2025.
Students eligible for this program must enroll full-time immediately after completing high school or their GED.
