The Georgia Budget and Policy Institute reports that Governor Nathan Deal’s Education Reform Commission recently shifted course to wrestle with a fundamental question: what does it cost to educate Georgia’s K-12 students.Georgia currently ranks 40th in the nation in state funding per student. Commission chair Charles Knapp (former UGA President) is advocating student-based budgeting which means each child is appropriated a base amount with additional funds going to children with greater learning needs, including low-income, special education and ELLs.If Georgia wants to really make a difference then this committee needs to get this right. Originally, funding was not part of the purview of the committee. The deadline for the commission is December 18, 2015.
