As in some other states (see the recent Idaho policy analyst report), the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education recently “approved a strategic plan that aims to increase enrollment and boost the number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) degrees and certificates awarded.” (http://www.publicopiniononline.com/local/ci_25003642/passhe-board-approves-strategic-plan-boost-enrollment-stem).
Meanwhile, colleges and universities in Pennsylvania continue to cut or suspend growth in programs such as languages and classics. For example: “The University of Pittsburgh will close graduate programs in religious studies and continues to weigh the fate of graduate programs in German and the classics, which were closed to admissions in 2012.”
