Update:
On Friday, May 27, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled that the latest attempts made by the state legislature to provide equitable funding for public school districts had failed and reiterated the consequences of not meeting a June 30 funding deadline. This week, after two hours of discussion regarding school funding and announcing a $70+ million May tax revenue shortfall sure to impact the budget, Senate leaders ended talks of passing legislation. Without addressing the court’s ruling, lawmakers formally adjourned the 2016 legislative session on Wednesday, June 1.
No special sessions have been announced at this time; however, some lawmakers have offered other ideas as possible solutions: amend the state constitution, take the issue to federal courts, or secure the governor’s guarantee to pardon anyone the court holds in contempt.
