2022 Call for Applications
Director of the Cultivating New Voices among Scholars of Color (CNV) Mentoring Program
Application deadline: August 16, 2022
The NCTE Research Foundation is soliciting applications from individuals interested in being considered for the directorship of its Cultivating New Voices among Scholars of Color (CNV) Mentoring Program. Please submit your application to Betina Hsieh, chair of the Research Foundation, and Kristen Ritchie, NCTE liaison to the Research Foundation, no later than August 16, 2022.
Position Description and Selection Criteria
The new director will serve for either of the following terms:
- Two cohorts, from November 20, 2022, to April 1, 2026
- Three cohorts, from November 20, 2022, to April 1, 2028
Preference will be given to senior scholars who can demonstrate a broad affiliation with other senior scholars in the field and an understanding of the challenges new faculty of color face in the profession.
Preference will also be given to candidates who have a former affiliation with or prior knowledge of CNV or who possess relevant experience in other mentoring programs, such as the Literacy Research Association’s STAR program.
Duties of the CNV Director
The director will:
- serve as ex officio member of the NCTE Research Foundation Board of Trustees;
- travel to the NCTE Annual Conventions to attend CNV Fall Institutes and two-per-cohort university sites, yet to be selected, to attend CNV Spring Institutes;
- manage and update the senior mentor list;
- pair CNV fellows with one of their senior mentor choices;
- develop the agenda for all CNV Fall and Spring Institutes;
- serve as moderator for all activities at CNV Institutes and for the annual CNV reception held at the NCTE Annual Convention;
- organize conference-like presentations given by CNV fellows at Fall and Spring Institutes; and
- solicit and negotiate for support (e.g., course release) from their home institution.
Additional considerations for time commitment: Typically, the director must allot four days per year for travel during each of the CNV Institutes—Fall and Spring—and up to 20 hours per month for CNV directorship activities.

- 500-word statement about (1) why they would like to be the director, (2) relevant managerial and leadership skills, (3) what they anticipate contributing to CNV, and (4) what direction they would like to set for CNV over the course of their years of service
