NCTE welcomes back award-winning author team Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson as they discuss their most recent works for young readers. Recognize! and Defiant add to the authors’ collection of works on the mattering of Black lives, stories, and experiences.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Roberta Price Gardner is an assistant professor of reading and literacy education at Kennesaw State University in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education. Her research explores Black childhood literacies; African American children’s literature; and the sociocultural contexts and policy implications of race, place, gender, and social class. Her work has appeared in publications such as Urban Education, Children’s Literature in Education, Journal of Children’s Literature, Research in the Teaching of English, Theory Into Practice, and Language Arts.
ABOUT THE FEATURED GUESTS
Wade Hudson is president of Just Us Books, Inc., an independent publisher of Black-interest and multicultural books for young readers which he and his wife founded in 1988. Among his published titles are the middle grade anthologies, We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices and The Talk: Conversations About Race, Love & Truth, co-edited with Cheryl, and published by Crown Books for Young Readers. His coming-of-age memoir Defiant: Growing Up in the Jim Crow South, was published by Crown this October.
Cheryl Willis Hudson is vice president and editorial director of Just Us Books. Her published titles include the classic; AFRO-BETS ABC Book and Bright Eyes, Brown Skin (with Bernette G. Ford, illustrated by George Ford) and Brave. Black. First:50+ African Ameri-can Women Who Changed the World, illustrated by Erin K. Robinson. She is co-editor of Recognize! An Anthology Honoring & Amplifying Black Life (with Wade) was released this October by Crown.
