The novel begins with the Baudelaire orphans’ transfer to Prufrock Preparatory School. The orphans are Violet, a fourteen-year-old girl who loves to invent things; Klaus, twelve-year-old brother who loves to read and is very intelligent; and Sunny, their infant sister who bites things with her four sharp teeth. Since their parents died in a house fire the children have been shuttled from place to place trying to escape their evil uncle , Count Olaf, who is after their inherited fortune.
