Girl, Interrupted is a nonfiction book based on Susanna Kaysen’s two-year stay in McLean Psychiatric Hospital outside of Boston, which began in 1967 when she was eighteen. (Girl, Interrupted was also produced as a 1999 film starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.) According to Kaysen’s account, she was admitted to the hospital after a mere twenty-minute long interview with a doctor she had never even met before.
