Grendel is a monster that is confused by the men who surround him and his place among them. He has a longing to be accepted, but is only ridiculed by the humans as well as other animals. Because he cannot be accepted, he decides to take on the attitude that the world is stupid and lacks meaning. As he watches the humans, he sees the effects that their meaningless actions have upon each other and this deepens his sense of disappointment in the human race.
