Gwyn Hyman Rubio’s (1998) novel Icy Sparks is the story of a young girl’s struggle with
Tourette Syndrome and growing up in a rural Kentucky town. Both of her parents died when she
was very young and she lives with her maternal grandmother and grandfather. Icy does not have
any friends her own age and spends most of her free time exploring the land around her house
and devising ways to hide her uncontrollable pops, jerks, and croaks.
