The novel, Jubilee, by Margaret Walker (1966) is based on the life of Walker’s maternal great grandmother, Margaret
Duggans Ware Brown. It is a realistic account of the South before, during and after the Civil War. The novel focuses on
the main character of Vyry and her personal experiences as a slave girl in Georgia, through her maturation into an adult
woman and her entry into a free world. The novel is a story of hope and courage as the characters overcome the trials
and tribulations of slavery and post war reformation.
