The novel begins with twelve-year-old Veronica Davis being piled into her mother’s Volkswagen bus and driven away from her home in Newbury Park, California, along with her younger sister Katie and her mentally disabled little bother, Tim. Veronica’s mother, Maggie, drives the children to where they believe they will be having a picnic. ln reality, Maggie Davis has decided to leave her husband due to his abusiveness.
