Douglass’ text begins with a preface by William Lloyd Garrison and a letter from Wendell Phillips, white abolitionists who attest to the truthfulness of Douglass’ memoir. The narrative starts at Douglass’ birth and describes the deprivation he experiences at the hand of his slave master. As he grows, Douglass describes the cruel, violent practices he witnesses and endures while an enslaved child on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
