Secrets in the Fire by Henning Mankell (2003) is a novel based on a true story, describing what is like to live through war-torn Mozambique. It is described as “a hardhitting, eye opening novel.” (Oluonye, 2004, p. 152) It tells the story of a girl, Sofia,whose father is killed by bandits, while trying to protect her and her sister Maria. Later, Sofia loses her legs and her sister Maria to a landmine. Sofia also has a hard adjustment, coping with the loss of her legs and forming a new life.
