The Fighting Ground (1984) is a work of historical fiction that successfully parallels the complexity of allegiance to the complexity of adolescent conformity. Ethel Twichell (1984, June) from The Horn Book Magazine calls Avi’s book “a moving example of the brutality of war” (p. 325). It has been nominated for many awards including the Kentucky Bluegrass Award in 1986 and is featured on several Best Books lists.
