Angela Johnson’s novel, The First Part Last (2003) tells the story of a sixteen-year-old father who, after losing his girlfriend, Nia, during the baby’s delivery, finds it impossible to give their daughter, Feather, up for adoption. He boldly takes responsibility for Feather, promising to give her a life full of care and love. This novel is told in a series of four parts, that alternate in a “now” (after Feather’s birth) and “then” (before Feather’s birth) pattern of chapters.
