Chris Wooding’s The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray (2004), allows readers to escape into a
dark, spooky area in the Old Quarter of London where wyches and ghouls threaten to
take over the world. The only hope for humanity is the protagonist, seventeen year old
Thaniel and his mentor Cathaline. The duo also helps save poor Alaizabel who is
constantly pestered by a ghoulish bunch. Readers will find themselves transported into
this vividly described work of fiction in which they will encounter wyches, Rawhead and
Bloodybones, Stitchface, and the Drowned Folk.
