Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag-End, Underhill, Hobbiton, is a hobbit, a being smaller than a dwarf but larger than a Lilliputian. He is, as are all members of his race, gentle and peace loving; he enjoys eating (hobbits tend to be fat), as well as giving and receiving gifts. Bilbo is persuaded by the wizard Gandalf to join thirteen dwarves on a dangerous mission to Lonely Mountain. The dwarves hope to reclaim an ancient treasure that belonged to their ancestors, but was stolen and is now guarded by the evil dragon Smaug.
