The Pact: A Love Story (1998, April) is a compelling, suspenseful novel by Jodi Picoult capturing the multiple voices of the characters involved in a murder trial. Opening with the death of Emily and her boyfriend standing beside her, the world of the teenage couple and their parents is turned upside down. The close friendship between two families is torn apart as Chris is placed in prison charged with Emily’s murder. The novel is structured with past and present sections that flashback to significant moments in Emily and Chris’s past that explain Emily’s depression, pregnancy, and feelings on being sexually intimate with Chris.
