The novel opens as Marnie Isherwood, sixteen, enters for the first time Torcurra, the small fishing town where she and her new husband, Isake, will settle and live for awhile. She is nervous around her new husband because he is more than twice her age and she is unsure how to treat him. She acts hesitantly and addresses him with strict formality.
