Grade Level:
After Aida Salazar wrote about a Latina girl’s coming of age in The Moon Within, her son requested that she write the same type of novel told from the perspective of a boy. First crushes, puberty, gender, and rites of passage all have a place in the novel she wrote at her son’s request. There aren’t many tween novels written from the boy’s perspective, though, which makes Ultraviolet unique and a much-needed perspective within this age range.
