Nina Lewis and Joyce and their dog Silky had been traveling across America in their Chevy van for almost a month as they approached Montpelier. Nina could not even remember how many places they had lived, maybe fourteen states, but none had been right for Joyce. Nina had stoically accepted their constant moves, not angry at Joyce for constantly uprooting her but hoping that this move would prove different.
