2nd Annual Read-In Event at LIT Java Coffee and Books

February 27, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Free

LIT Java Coffee & Books, an official host site for the nationwide African American Read-In (#AARI26), will host its annual celebration of Black literature and storytelling on Friday, February 27, from 6:00–8:00 PM at its Pearland location (5018 Broadway St., Pearland, TX 77581).

This year’s theme, “Blast from the Past. Launch into the Future.”, honors the legacy of Black authors and leaders while inspiring young readers to imagine bold possibilities for their own futures.

The highlight of the evening will be a special appearance by Leland Melvin — NASA astronaut, educator, former NFL player, and children’s book author. Melvin will read from and sign his new children’s book, Space Chasers: To the Moon, which encourages young readers to pursue curiosity, resilience, and big dreams. Pre-orders for the book are currently available through LIT Java’s website.

In addition to the author reading and book signing, the evening will feature:

  • Volunteer readers from the community sharing works by Black authors
  • A Drum Circle led by Mr. Jajuan Boney
  • A Mystery Book Swap, where students receive a wrapped, brand-new book by a Black author
  • A Student Writing Competition, open to elementary, middle, and high school students
