These events provide opportunities for English language arts teachers to learn new strategies and techniques, network with colleagues, and stay up-to-date on the latest research and best practices in the field.
If you have an event that you would like to submit to be included on the NCTE event calendar, please fill out the event submission form. Read In to Honor, Learn, Connect, and Empathize: Jaqueline Woodson’s “This Is The Rope”
February 28, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
FreeAs a middle school (grades 5-9) we will meet Jaqueline Woodson via her incredible sharing via video online. We will learn about why NCTE sponsors a Read In and why it is such an honor to participate during Black History Month and also to always consider what we read and teach and learn for an anti-racist, just world. In assembly, we will learn about the Great Migration and then read Woodson’s This Is The Rope. Then, community members will model storytelling by sharing personal reactions and personal stories about migration in their own families. In a follow up discussion, advisory groups will respond to discussion prompts aimed at the goals articulated in our title. Via storytelling, sharing and craft we will consider what we learn from Woodson, what we learn from our own reflections, and what we can learn from each other about what we carry with us forward.
