Led by former Middle Level Section Steering Committee member Dr. Carla España, this session will highlight innovative practices for teaching reading and writing to Latinx middle grades students.
Attendees will get
- text ideas for teaching Latinx middle school students.
- instructional strategies for teaching Latinx middle school students.
- space to share strategies and practices from their own classrooms.
Dr. España’s teaching, writing, and research live at the intersection of curriculum development, teacher education, and Latinx studies. She will share teacher lessons and resources from her new middle grades practitioner book, Narrative Writing with Latinx Teens: Testimonios, Texts, and Teaching. Dr. Carla España is a New York-based educator from Chile. She is an assistant professor of Puerto Rican and Latinx studies at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. Her research and teaching live at the intersections of Latinx studies, bilingual education, youth literature, and teacher preparation. Her most recent release is Narrative Writing with Latinx Teens: Testimonios, Texts, and Teaching . Dr. España is also the coauthor of En Comunidad: Lessons for Centering the Voices and Experiences of Bilingual Latinx Students and The Translanguaging Collections: Affirming Bilingual and Multilingual Learners Handbook. Her teaching journey began with bilingual sixth graders at Don Pedro Albizu Campos School in New York City.
