Orwell Award at 50: A Conversation on Teaching Honesty in a Populist Era with Sarah Stitzlein
Wednesday, January 28, 2026
7:00–8:00 p.m. ET
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of NCTE’s George Orwell Award, which honors creators of work that contributes to honesty and clarity in public language, NCTE invites you to a special webinar series where you can hear directly from winners of this prestigious award.
Join author and education philosopher Sarah Stitzlein for a conversation about her 2025 George Orwell Award–winning book, Teaching Honesty in a Populist Era: Emphasizing Truth in the Education of Citizens. In an age where multiple factors distort and complicate the discernment of truth, Stitzlein encourages educators to adopt an inquiry approach to citizenship education. She offers theories and ideas for connecting with students through cross-disciplinary work and by engaging directly with ideas that may be complex and nuanced.
Members will
- learn about populism and pragmatism in education contexts,
- hear theoretical and practical approaches to teaching honesty, and
- discuss how honest education can enhance democracy in the US.
This event is free for NCTE members. Not a member? Join today!
Registration for this event will close at 5:30 p.m. ET on January 28. Registrants will receive a Zoom meeting invitation after registering and reminder emails in advance of the event.
