Joint conference on elementary literacy and mathematics announced by the National Council of Teachers of English and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Champaign, IL, and Reston, VA – November 2023 – The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) are pleased to announce the creation of a joint conference focusing on K–5/elementary literacy and mathematics, to be held June 17–19, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.
Elementary teachers are critical in supporting students’ language and mathematics development during these formative years of education. Language arts and mathematics provide the tools to apply critical thinking skills to question and make sense of the world around us. The joint NCTE-NCTM conference will provide elementary teachers and leaders with the opportunity to develop their skills in mathematics and language arts as well as engage in teaching practices and strategies that support connected learning and engagement in both domains.
“The interconnectedness of math and literacy is at the center of our shared interests as organizations dedicated to critical thinking and collaboration,” said Emily Kirkpatrick, NCTE Executive Director. “We see boundless opportunities in cross-disciplinary approaches that have the power to strengthen the future for both of our learning communities.”
NCTM Executive Director Ken Krehbiel concurred: “Our organizations are excited about working together to support elementary teachers who have the added responsibility of teaching multiple subjects in students’ early years. This conference will address the foundational topics of math, reading, and writing and help to provide teachers with tools to inspire young learners.”
With the demand for actionable resources at a premium, this joint conference aims to fulfill this important need and spotlight the connection of mathematics education, language, and culture in elementary education.
