Like other universities, the University of Delaware (one of Delaware’s three public universities) is trying to make sense of the Affordable Care Act’s mandate of offering health insurance to those who work 30 hours or more per week at one institution. How this affects contingent faculty such as adjuncts or S-contractors is yet to be determined. At the University of Delaware, a full-time teaching load is four courses per semester totaling a forty hour work week. If four classes are forty hours, it would follow that three classes are 30 hours of work. Still, full-time faculty are also expected to advise students and attend department meetings. What part of their workload this sort of work constitutes is unclear. The issue is of importance especially to staffing for First-Year Writing who often rely on part-time faculty.
