HB859, better known as the “Georgia Campus Carry Act,” has passed the Georgia House and is currently awaiting action in the Georgia Senate. This bill allows for weapons to be carried by concealed carry license holders age 21 or older on college campuses across the state of Georgia and in buildings owned by or leased to institutions of postsecondary education. The bill does not allow guns to be carried inside dormitories, fraternity or sorority houses, or at athletic events, but would allow concealed weapons in classrooms and at other campus events.
While the University System of Georgia Board of Regents has expressed strong opposition to the bill, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal defends the legislation, saying arguments against it “lack validity.”
If passed, Georgia would be the 9th state to allow some form of campus carry.
