Mayor Muriel Bowser has nominated Antwan Wilson as the next chancellor of D.C. Public
Schools. If the D.C. Council accepts her nomination, Wilson will replace Kaya
Henderson, who resigned in September. Currently, Wilson is the school
superintendent in Oakland, CA. He supports charter schools and test-based
accountability for teachers and students. According to The Washington
Post, during his two and a half years as superintendent in Oakland,
graduation rates rose and suspension rates decreased. Critics, on the other
hand, point out that he overhauled special education services and his policies
caused a decline in enrollment.
The D.C.
Council will hold meetings on Nov. 30, Dec. 5, and Dec. 8 before voting on his
confirmation. If chosen, he will start on Feb. 1.
