The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has selected the College Board’s redesigned SAT as the new college entrance exam portion of the Michigan Merit Examination (MME) for 11th grade students, replacing the ACT. The three-year contract will begin in spring 2016 and was the result of a competitive bidding process. Although MDE is replacing ACT with SAT, the state has renewed its contract with ACT, Inc. for the WorkKeys assessment, which is also part of the MME. The 2016-18 MME will consist of the SAT; M-STEP content developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, in conjunction with the State of Michigan; and the ACT WorkKeys assessment.
Secondary English Language Arts teachers may be concerned about the differences between the SAT and ACT and how to best prepare their students for the SAT’s Reading and Writing sections. To this end, the College Board will provide free test preparation materials and access to online practice tests for all Michigan high schools and students, as well as professional development for teachers and administrators, beginning this spring (2015). Also worth noting is that the 2016 SAT will be redesigned to align with Michigan standards and will feature additional response types in addition to multiple choice.
