1970 NCTE Annual Business Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia
Background
Concerned about the possibility that vouchers giving public funds to parents, to be spent at the public or private school of their choice, could potentially destroy public education and could in effect support unconstitutional discriminatory practices, NCTE members passed this resolution.
Resolution
Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English reject any educational voucher system that can be used to support schools with religiously discriminatory or racist policies, or that can be used to avoid the necessity of providing free, high-quality public education for all children.
