Middle Level educators work with students at a unique moment in their development which means our approach to the teaching and learning of literacy is also unique within the field. Members of the Middle Level within NCTE will find that our resources and community provide meaningful opportunities to discuss classroom methods and philosophies with other innovative, nationally respected middle grade teachers. This journal publishes original contributions by middle level teachers, students, teacher educators, and researchers in response to specific themes that focus on our discipline, our teaching, and our students. Voices offers middle level teachers innovative and practical ideas for classroom use that are rooted in current research; this is a journal for teachers, by teachers.

The Middle Level Section Steering Committee (MLSSC) members are elected by the NCTE membership each year to a four-year term. The Chair is elected from within the MLSSC to a two-year term and serves on the NCTE Executive Committee representing the interests of the middle level membership.

The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN) promotes communication and cooperation among all individuals who have a special interest in adolescent literature, presents programs and conferences on this subject, promotes and increases the number of articles and publications devoted to it and integrates the efforts of all those with an interest in this literature.
