Alfredo Celedón Luján Elected Vice President of NCTE

Luján Will Take Office during Annual Convention in Houston

NCTE is pleased to announce the election of Alfredo Celedón Luján to the position of Vice President.

“I have been a member for three decades and have been revitalized as a professional through my experiences with the Council,” Luján says. “Through my participation in many conferences and by sitting on several committees, I have witnessed the inner workings of the organization and its commitment to teachers and students by preK–college professionals. I am thrilled at the opportunity to serve NCTE and to represent New Mexico and the Southwest.”

Luján is dean of students and teacher of English and study skills at Monte del Sol Charter School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is also deeply involved with the Bread Loaf Teacher Network, where he has been active since earning his master’s degree in 1987 through the Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English. During the summer, he is assistant to the director of the Bread Loaf School of English in Santa Fe.

In 2017, Luján was awarded the NCTE Advancement of People of Color Leadership Award for his contributions to the Council. His many previous roles include serving on the NCTE Executive Committee, the Secondary Section Steering Committee, the Assembly of Rural Teachers of English, and as chair for both the Commission on Literature and the Committee Against Racism and Bias in the Teaching of English.

Luján says these experiences have shown him that “the heart of NCTE is its membership. The thousands of members of NCTE represent millions of students in our school districts. The Executive Committee, the multiple sections, and the assemblies represent public, charter, private, and home schools, as well as colleges. We advocate for students of every color in the rainbow in every corner of our world. We demand equity in the classroom.”

Executive Director Emily Kirkpatrick notes that Alfredo’s personal commitment to these ideals “is evident in his long history with the organization. He has served at the forefront of many important moments in the life of NCTE, and I am excited to have him helping to lead us forward at a time when so many exciting opportunities are underway.”

NCTE materials in which Luján has played a role include:

Luján will take office as Vice President during the NCTE Annual Convention in Houston, Texas, in November 2018. He will join the Presidential Team, which currently includes Jocelyn A. Chadwick, Franki Sibberson, and Leah Zuidema.
