NCTE was recognized, along with other partner organizations, for best practice guidelines around literacy education in a recently reintroduced bicameral resolution by Representative Raskin and Senator Schatz condemning the alarming rate of book bans ahead of Banned Books Week, October 1–7, 2023.

NCTE and its members have been leaders in the fight against censorship since the early 1950s. Through the Intellectual Freedom Center, NCTE has continued to update its book rationale catalog into a searchable database, which now contains over 1,200 book rationales, exploring the importance of diverse perspectives in books.
