1974 NCTE Annual Business Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana
In response to actions by state legislatures in mandating courses of study in the schools (e.g., career education) and by state education agencies in writing regulations without consulting teachers or other professionals in English, NCTE members passed this resolution. Be it therefore
Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English discourage the legislative and state department practices of making unilateral curricular decisions which ought to be made by, or in consultation with, professionals; and
that NCTE offer its expertise and that of its affiliates to decision-making bodies to insure educationally sound curricular change.
