Committee on Literacy Assessment
Charge
Assessment continues to inform, even drive, curricula and pedagogies. Because it influences literacy teaching and learning—across the country and across every section of the Council—literacy assessment is a shared concern and a shared challenge. This committee will have the following charge:
- To advise the organization on literacy assessment practices (those that exist and those that should exist in a more just world) affecting the teaching of language arts across K–12, including an annual conversation with the Executive Director and one or more members of the Presidential Team.
- To create materials that assist classroom teachers in interpreting assessments, help students understand what assessments do and do not mean, and advocate for changes in assessments in student-centric ways, as well as engage in other activities that are in service to teachers and students related to assessment.
- To suggest tools, educational resources, publications, and the like on literacy assessment that NCTE should consider developing.
- To provide subject matter expertise on specific literacy assessment matters, including formulating proactive and responsive insights to be shared with national media and/or relevant organizations (e.g., National Association of Educational Progress). Based on national themes and conversations, provide expertise to staff and elected leaders.
