Call for Interest K-12 ELA Standards Development 

Opportunity open for teachers, teacher educators, and researchers

NCTE has commissioned the creation of not only its first update of ELA standards in 30 years for grades 6–12, but also the organization’s first standards for elementary grades K–5. These standards are envisioned to work together and integrate modern instructional needs concerning media and data literacy across K–12 grade levels.   

There have been remarkable changes in teaching and learning since the current standards were written, just as there have been remarkable changes in practices of literacy. NCTE’s ability to bring together educators from across disciplines encourages us to think about how updates to the standards may better reflect the interrelationship between the English language arts and all content areas. These new standards are envisioned to support teaching and learning, not impose restrictive conditions upon teacher agency.  

For this project, NCTE seeks 18 members for two panels, nine representing grades K–5 and nine representing grades 6–12. Panelists must possess requisite expertise and experience and be available to travel two times per year, in addition to attending the NCTE Annual Convention.  

This project seeks teaching expertise in the following categories: 

  • Teaching experience in either K–5 or 6–12 classrooms 
  • Expertise working with standards and working knowledge of modern standards, including but not limited to National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, state standards, and teacher credentialing and certification  
  • Grounded experience in supporting learners of diverse backgrounds, including multilingual learners, and a commitment to student agency and voice 
  • Collaboration within diverse learning and writing teams 

NCTE will grant each panelist a $2,000 stipend, to be paid over two years, provided at the midpoint and conclusion of the work, as well as registration for and travel support to standards panel meetings and the NCTE Annual Convention in 2027 and 2028.
