NCTE Affiliate Newsletter of Excellence Award

Award Details

Purpose
To honor outstanding affiliate newsletters and their editors and to encourage excellence in these publications. Newsletters selected represent models for affiliate newsletters to emulate.

Who Can Participate
Any affiliate of NCTE that has published a minimum of two newsletters from May of the previous year through the program deadline on June 30 in the year of the award is eligible to submit their newsletter for consideration for the award.

Frequency/Number of Awards

Outstanding newsletters will be selected and recognized as Newsletters of Excellence at the Affiliate Breakfast at each year’s NCTE Annual Convention.

Award Specifics
Certificates will be presented to each winning affiliate in the categories of print newsletter and online-only newsletter.

Award Criteria and Deadline
Affiliates nominate themselves for this award by submitting four copies each of two different issues of their newsletter (published at least twice a year) as well as the completed Affiliate Newsletter Award submission form or by providing online access to their electronic newsletter, published between May 1 of the previous year and June 30 of the year of the award. If you are nominating a print newsletter and you would like to share PDF copies in lieu of mailing hard copies, you may upload PDF documents in the submission form.

Submissions will be judged on the following criteria (updated in 2022):

The affiliate produces and publishes a minimum of two high-quality newsletters a year.
The affiliate aligns their newsletters with the NCTE mission.
The affiliate provides information about upcoming programming that supports their members.
The affiliate provides information and/or resources that align with their vision/mission and strategic plan.
The affiliate designs their layout through a consistent typography for copy and headlines that meets professional standards.
The affiliate newsletter appeals to a diverse audience with varying teaching assignments, grade levels, and/or experience within the affiliate and the communities their members serve.
The affiliate publishes well-written and well-organized pieces that have an engaging voice and clear purpose.
The affiliate designs their newsletter for easy accessibility across different browsers and on mobile devices.

Submission and Deadline

Submit four copies of two different issues of your affiliate’s newsletter published in the previous year or in the year of the award (or provide online access to the electronic newsletter published at least twice a year) as well as the completed Affiliate Newsletter Award submission form. If you are nominating a print newsletter and you would like to share PDF copies in lieu of mailing hard copies, you may upload PDF documents in the submission form. Hard-copy submissions should be sent the NCTE Affiliate Office, 340 N. Neil St., #104, Champaign, IL 61820. Materials must be postmarked or submitted online no later than June 30 of the year of the award. Late entries will not be reviewed.

The winning affiliate(s) will be notified in late summer so that they may have a representative present to receive the award at the NCTE Annual Convention Affiliate Breakfast. This representative is expected to purchase a breakfast ticket with Convention registration.

You may copy long responses from another program and paste them into the form.

Administration
The Standing Committee on Affiliates will administer the award. The Committee will appoint a member to handle the judging, the award specifics, and notification to applicants. The committee will also provide annual feedback on ways to improve the program so that it runs smoothly. The NCTE Affiliate Office will handle the initial publicity and notification about the program to affiliates.

Judging
Each submission (submission form plus three different newsletters published in the last year) will be independently evaluated.
